The world of Puerh is full of mysteries and confusions. In this world, there is almost nothing can be explained within a few words. No books will be able to satisfy all your questions. Making your own experience is the only way. 


Starting from 2017, we cooperate with Puerh experts, who devote their lives in searching for the truth in this world of mystery. They are not just passionate Puerh lovers, but also producers, researchers, Puerh-hunters and teachers who generously and eagerly share their knowledge to other tea lovers. „Puerh of the month“ will be focusing on the origin, making, storage, and history of Puerh. Therefore, you are going to experience all kinds of Puerh, from harvest of the year to the old aged selection; from jungle to jungle; from varietal to varietal; from raw (sheng) to ripped (shu/shou); from storage to storage. There is certainly no limit in this world. 


With an affordable 25,00 EUR (plus postage) per month, you are going to find this surprise parcel with an exclusively selected sample of this „myterious“ Puerh, as well as the specific information every month at your doorstep.

In September we begin a new cycle and going to learn more about the "dark side" of Pu Erh. To start with, we selected a particularly rich contemporary shu cha - a rarity and doubtless the best Shu Cha we have seen since the last decade. 

The leaves of this tea come from Kokang, a small Burmese region nestled between Shan City, Gengma and Yong De in Yunnan. Kokang is a particularly rich area, for the quality of its gardens and natural conditions, as well as their locally developed tea cultivation. Yet, it remains one of the most mysterious and unknown areas for pu erh, as it has been regularly in the scene of armed conflicts since the 1960s, which makes it difficult to explore and to develop a genuine tea market. The situation and armed violence aggravated further since 2015, making access practically impossible. Fortunately, some Kokang tea productions do manage to cross the Chinese border, and offer us a glance into the richness of this unknown terroir.

In July, we began our discovery journey with Manzhuang - East of Xishuangbanna, the craddle of chinese Pu Erh. This month, we are explore the taste of the West of Mekong  - Menghai County. 

For a better understanding of the Menghai taste, again, we have packed 2 Pu Erhs from this region. The first tea is from a Hani village - Huo Ka - North of Bulang Mountains (boarder of the administration of Bulang Mountain), about 20km South of Menghai City. This tea was made from the mature tea trees of an old garden of the village, at the altitude of 1700m.

The second tea is from the region of Banzhang, only 8km South of Huo Ka, in the heart of Bulang Mountains. Since 2000, the village Lao Banzhang is under the spotlight and developed into one of the most prestigious under the 3 most expensive Pu Erh producing villages in Yunnan. This tea is from a old tea garden also at an altitude of 1700m, between Lao and Xin Banzhang. Not until recently, this was still belonged to the Lao (old) Banzhang. Now it is adminstrative under Xin (neu) Banhzhang only a few hundreds meters away, of which the villagers were actually from Lao Banzhang. Therefore these leaves were also at a much much more affordable price, even though the taste and quality made not such different as some say.

The goal of this month is to make the picture of the taste of Pu Erh from the Menghai region:

For the second part of our small exploration journey in 2017, this month we will be traveling to the famous Mount Manzhuang, east of Xishuangbanna. Within this area, are the "six great tea mountains", covering 100 x 60km from East to West - is the first documented Pu Erh producing area since the 18th century. Four of these six tea mountains locate in the small area of Xiangming, including Manzhuang. This month Pu Erhs are both coming from the same garden, including old tea trees belonging to the Deng family (one of the big families of Manzhuang village). These teas were perfectly mastered by Ms. Deng Xiao Mei in a traditional way from the first Spring harvest of 2015 and 2017 respectively with a contemporary touch. Hence prepare them separately and try to investigate the differences in the cup.

Ten Tiao Cha is characterized by a very distinct tree size, which do not develope large trunk like Qiao Mu. Instead these trees are long branches without branching that shoot into the air. The buds appear only at the ends of each long branch. This unique way of trimming is of course not only has an aesthetic impact on its appearance but also marking its special character in its tea. Therefore Ten Tiao Cha is a special choicec in representing the specific climate and soil of Mengku, and of course its traditional way of tea production.

Luo Hou You, a producer from the Pu'Er region, who founded the factory in the mountains of Kucong Shan Zhai village in 2005. This small family style tea factory which is far from cities and large tea factories, produces only limited quantities and relies above all, is their quality. His very first creation remains however the most interesting to us. 

Here is the special order from our Pu Erh expert, as this Tuo Cha was produced exactly as Mr. Luo's first creation. It is not just interesting for now, but a highly recommended Pu Erh for the collectors.

This month Pu Erh focuses again on the "old Style", which is specifically produced for the purpose of long storage. It is produced in Xiaguan Tea Factory in 2005, under "Bao Yan" brand. Because of its excellent critiria in quality: strong tannin character and power, obvious dryness and persuasiveness, it is one of the most popular Pu Erh that is aquired by the Pu Erh lovers/collectors. Baoyan Label is generally produced for the Tibetian as Jin Cha. Usually in the form of a mushroom, but also as brick, like the one we present in this month newsletter. This would be then transported in the linen transportsack. This Pu Erh offers a strong tannin structure - an excellent qualitfication for the development of a complex aroma profile in the futuer. However, it has already become a beautiful tea within JUST 12 years of age. And its climax is yet to come.

These two teas were produced by "Jinuo Shan Cha Chang“, a young factory founded by Mr. Lee Du Nan in the 60s. The project was initially supported by the government to establish a large tea garden of over 1,300 hectares in a fallow zone in Jinuo Shan. So it is a modern tea garden or terrace that is being managed according to various measures and know-how and it is naturally BIO. Fertilizers and pesticides are strictly banned.

The aim of this month is to focus on the different directions of fashion under the topic of Pu Erh. So we have choosen two kinds of Pu Erhs from the same garden, same person and same year:

  1. the "classical" style - 100g Tuo Cha
  2. the "contemporary" style - 100g Mini Cake

Both were produced in 2016.

This is an excellent example of the contemporary fermented teas (industrial fermented Shu Cha). It was designed by Lan Ting Chun, a small factory in the Yong De (Lincang) area. It was one of the first private establishments to produce fermented Pu Erh (Shu Cha) in the 1990s.


The leaves came from a late-grade autumn harvest, i.e., buds and young leaves, from the Yong De area. This type of fine grade usually produces very dense liquors, particularly rich flavors and very contemporary flavors.

This Shu Cha was produced und industrally fermented in 1994, Yunnan. Then it was imported by Nan Tian Teahouse and stored with enormous care after the Hong Kong storage traditions for over 20 years. The fermentation was only done partially, which allow space for further development in the storage. Due to this special storage treatment, this tea has developed into a very fine hybrid between Sheng and Shu Cha. It kept both the "freshness" from Sheng as well as the silkiness texture of Shu. Moreoever, this batch of Shu Cha was made with fine quality raw material i.e. young leaves and buds, into order to create such exclusive tea. This special Hong Kong storage tradition is the key to create the depth of taste and "refined" texture, which is called "Hong Kong Taste". This is an excellent example of Shu Cha from the Hong Kong storage in the 90's.
